What Are the Different Ways a Taxi Service at RSW Calculates Their Rates?
Many of our taxi service at RSW clients have asked us how taxi fares, in general, are calculated. So we decided to write this blog in response to this. Taxi fares are calculated in several different ways, and in the simplest of circumstances, a driver could agree to a set price to travel from one destination to another. For instance, a taxi at the airport may charge a set rate to go to a nearby hotel. These fares can range between 20-30 USD dollars or more during holidays or during seasonal peaks. Sometimes the driver is willing to negotiate a set price with a passenger.
More frequently, fares have a complex formula and are charged based on time, use, and mileage. Immediately upon entering a taxi, a passenger will be charged a use fee. This amount does vary and can range from a couple of dollars, and much higher in congested areas.
The use fee will not take distance into account, the fee will be set, and when the driver turns on their meter, the counter will show a starting point at the use fee. The next stage is charging by time and mileage.
The reason time is calculated is because not every taxi takes the same time to get to a destination. Heavy traffic is always a factor, so there could often be a charge per a set amount of minutes, or even per minute. Often, fares charge for both minutes and the distance traveled. The meter will charge a quarter or so for every tenth of a mile (km) traveled. However, should the ride take longer than expected, charges for this will need to be re-assessed.
